Korean slang words 2026 — 15 words young Koreans actually use

갓생, 킹받다, 에바, 꾸안꾸 and 11 more. Real Korean slang sorted by mood, with what each word is short for and when it sounds wrong.

The short answer: Most Korean slang is a shortened phrase. People take the first syllable of each word and glue them together. 갓생 is "god" + 인생 ("life"). 점메추 is three words in three syllables. Once you see the trick, new slang gets much easier to guess.

Slang lists online go old fast. So we kept this one honest: every word below is already recorded in 우리말샘 (Urimalsaem), the open dictionary run by Korea's national language institute. These words have staying power. You'll still hear them in group chats in 2026.

We sorted them by mood, the way you'd actually need them.

When life is going well

KoreanShort forMeaning
갓생 (gatsaeng)God + 인생 ("life")A productive, well-planned life. Waking up early, working out, reading.
오운완 (ounwan)오늘 운동 완료"Today's workout: done." Often a hashtag under a gym selfie.
소확행 (sohwakhaeng)작지만 확실한 행복"A small but sure happiness," like a good coffee on a quiet morning.
플렉스 (peullekseu)English "flex"Spending big on something, often to show it off.

You'll see 갓생 살기 (gatsaeng salgi), "living a god-life," all over social media. It's half a joke and half a real goal.

When something annoys you

KoreanShort forMeaning
킹받다 (kingbatda)King + 열받다 ("to get mad")To be really annoyed. Usually playful, not real anger.
에바 (eba)Said to come from "error over""That's too much," "that's over the line."
스불재 (seubuljae)스스로 불러온 재앙"A disaster I brought on myself." Stayed up all night? 스불재.
갑분싸 (gapbunssa)갑자기 분위기 싸해짐"The mood suddenly went cold." That awkward silence after a bad joke.

킹받네 (kingbatne) is the one you'll meet most. A friend steals your last fry and grins? 킹받네.

When you talk about people

KoreanShort forMeaning
썸 (sseom)English "something"The "are we dating or not?" stage.
인싸 / 아싸 (inssa / assa)Insider / outsiderA social butterfly / someone who keeps to themselves.
손절 (sonjeol)A stock-market word for "cutting losses"Cutting someone out of your life.
알잘딱깔센 (aljalttakkkalsen)A whole sentence: "on your own, well, neatly, with sense"Someone who does things well and neatly without being told.

알잘딱깔센 is the longest one here. Even many Koreans laugh when they say it in full.

When you shop and eat

KoreanShort forMeaning
꾸안꾸 (kkuankku)꾸민 듯 안 꾸민 듯"Dressed up, but looks effortless."
내돈내산 (naedonnaesan)내 돈 주고 내가 산"Bought with my own money." It tells you a review isn't sponsored.
점메추 (jeommechu)점심 메뉴 추천"Lunch menu, any ideas?"
국룰 (gungnul)국민 + rule"A rule everyone follows." Fried chicken with beer? 국룰.

Notice how many are about honesty and small joys. That says a lot about what young Koreans care about.

When not to use them

Not with your boss, not with your friend's parents. Slang is for friends your age and for group chats. In a job interview, 킹받네 would be a disaster. A 스불재, really.

Some words feel older than others. Slang ages fast everywhere. A word that felt fresh a few years ago can make a teenager grin today. If you're not sure, listen first and copy what your friends say.

Spelling matters online. These words are usually written in 한글, not English letters. Searching 갓생 will find much more than "gatsaeng." New to reading? Start with our Korean alphabet chart.

Why does Korean make so many short words?

Korean syllables are compact blocks, so first-syllable shortcuts stay easy to say and read. 점심 메뉴 추천 has six syllables. 점메추 has three, and it still sounds like a word.

Not everyone loves this. A 2023 Korea Herald article asked whether slang and short forms are "degrading" Korean. Some people worried about losing the language's richness. A linguist answered that you can't stop language from changing as people talk. A Hangeul group said the point isn't to ban slang, but to know where to draw the line.

When 썸 turns into the real thing, you'll need our guide to saying I love you in Korean. For the shortest slang of all, letters with no vowels, see ㅋㅋ, ㅎㅎ and ㅇㅇ. And for words only fans use, try K-pop fandom words.

Quick check

  1. Your friend wakes at 6, runs, then studies. What kind of life is that?
  2. Someone posts a review and adds 내돈내산. What are they telling you?
  3. You ate a whole cake at midnight and now feel sick. Which word fits?

Answers: 1. 갓생. 2. They paid for it themselves, so it's not an ad. 3. 스불재.
