Korean social media slang — 맞팔, 인생샷, 짤, 핫플 and more (Instagram words)

What do 맞팔, 인생샷 and 갬성 mean on Korean Instagram? Read one made-up post from top to bottom and learn the social media words Koreans use every day.

The short answer: Korean social media slang is mostly English words, cut short. 맞팔 (matpal) is "follow each other," and 인생샷 (insaengsyat) is "the best photo of your life." 짤 (jjal) is a meme picture, and 핫플 (hatpeul) is a "hot place" everyone visits. If a word looks strange, try reading it as clipped English.

You open a Korean friend's Instagram. The caption says "핫플 다녀옴 인생샷 건짐 ㅋㅋ 맞팔해요". Half of it is English in disguise. Let's read one post together, line by line.

Let's read a post

Here's a made-up post from a friend who just visited a café. The right column shows what each part means.

On the screenRead it asMeaning
성수동 핫플 다녀옴hot place"Went to a trendy spot in Seongsu-dong"
인생샷 건짐the photo of my life"Got the best photo ever"
오늘 갬성 미쳤다감성, said playfully"The vibe today is amazing"
카페에 인증샷 남기면 음료 할인이래proof photo"The café gives a drink discount if you post a photo"
오저치고?오늘 저녁 치킨 고"Fried chicken for dinner tonight, yes?"
맞팔 환영follow each other"Happy to follow back"

Notice how much English hides here. 핫플 is "hot place," cut to two syllables. 샷 is "shot," as in a photo. The Korean is just the shape of the sounds.

What's the difference between all the "팔" words?

팔 (pal) is short for 팔로우, "follow." Once you know that, the rest is easy.

  • 맞팔 (matpal): following each other. 맞 means "facing each other," like in 맞장구, agreeing back and forth.
  • 언팔 (eonpal): unfollow.
  • 팔로워 (pallowo): a follower.

A friend might say 맞팔해요! ("Let's follow each other!") right after you meet. It's a friendly thing to say, a bit like swapping numbers.

짤, 짤방 — why "cut"?

짤 (jjal) is any picture you share online, usually a funny one, like a meme or a reaction face. It comes from 짤방 (jjalbang), short for "잘림 방지," "to avoid being cut."

Here's the story. Some early Korean online boards deleted posts that had no picture. So people added a random image to every post to keep it from being cut. That image became 짤방, and later just 짤. Today you'll see 짤 저장 (jjal jeojang), "saving a meme."

Comments: good and bad

KoreanRomanizationMeaning
댓글daetgeulA comment. A standard word, not slang
선플seonpeulA kind, positive comment
악플akpeulA hateful, nasty comment. 악 means "evil"

플 comes from 리플, the Korean shortening of "reply." 악플 is a serious topic in Korea. News stories and campaigns often ask people to leave 선플 instead.

When not to say it

  • These are casual words. In a work email, say 사진 (sajin, "photo") instead of 인생샷.
  • Skip 존맛 (jonmat) and JMT for now. You'll see them under every food photo. They mean "super tasty." But the 존 part comes from a rude swear word, and the dictionary marks 존맛 as vulgar. Use 맛있어요 [마시써요] (masisseoyo, "it's delicious") or 맛집 [맏찝] (matjip, "a great restaurant") instead.
  • Spelling police alert. The official spelling rules would write some of these words differently. The dictionary lists 인생 숏 and 폴로어, for example. But on social media, almost everyone writes 인생샷 and 팔로워.

Why is Korean social media so full of short words?

Korean syllables are compact blocks, so clipped words stay easy to read. Two blocks, 핫플, carry a whole English phrase. On a small screen, that matters.

There's also the photo culture. Cafés in Korea design walls, cups and lighting for photos. People visit a 핫플 partly to get a 인생샷. That's why these words show up so often together. If you visit Seoul, you'll see signs offering a small gift for an 인증샷 (injeungsyat, "proof photo").

Quick check

  1. A friend posts a stunning photo of themselves at sunset. They'd call it → 인생샷
  2. Someone you met at a language exchange writes 맞팔해요. What should you do? → Follow them back
  3. A café sign says "인증샷 올리면 쿠키 증정". What do you need to do for a free cookie? → Post a photo taken at the café

In one line: Korean social media slang is clipped English; 팔 is follow, 샷 is a photo, and 플 is a reply.
